What should I buy for a really poofy comforter that isn't too warm?

I'm going to college in the fall, and I want to have a really poofy comforter because I've never had one before--I just want to smoosh down into my covers! But I'm just in LA, and I don't need anything that's super warm. Are down comforters hot? What should I use instead?
