Question:

What should I buy for my first apartment on my own?

My boyfriend and I just got our first new apartment ever. I've only ever lived with my parents and in dorms so I don't know of all the things that are necessary for a home. I have the essentials like bed, couch, tv stand, table, bedding, bathroom accessories, pots and pans, dinnerware, etc. but what else would I need? I keep thinking "Oh! Ice cube trays!" or water pitchers, ironing board...

What are some suggestions for the little odds and ends we would need or would at least make life convenient?

  1. I agree with your previous responder.  Keep a running list on the fridge.  Why buy something somebody else uses and you never will?  Walmart is a good place to start, but again, wait and see.  If you can get by with an alternative for a while, try to hold off.  Example, you can make great toast in the oven and do not need a toaster on day one.  I have a toaster and still make toast in the oven because it is just better to me.  When you do buy something, buy the best you can afford because it will last you forever.  Example, knives.  Have fun.

  2. im wondering that myself i dont wanna feel like im blowing money on thinsg i dont need so I in the same shoes as you right now.

  3. this may not be an answer to your question, but we always went and bought things as it came up that we realized we needed it.  A pre-made list may not be the best way to go, because you may find you don't use a toaster, or coat hangers.  And you may find you need an ethernet cable and a pizza cutter instead.  We made our own running list on the fridge.  And when I went shopping, I alway thought to myself, what items will I need to prepare this particular meal, or complete this particular project?  And if I realized I needed a strainer or a bottle of wood glue I would purchase that at the same time.  That's why a department or discount super store that sells food and stuff is nice.
