See if you can investigate a good MMMF or similar. There are many that are paying above market, if your time horizon isn't excessive.

Hard to say without knowing your situation.  

My guess is the best thing for you to do would be to put it into a savings account (ideally one paying ok interest like ING or Emigrant Direct) and just let it sit there until something crappy happens (medical expense, emergency plane ticket, etc).  They call this an emergency fund generally.  And trust me, when you really need a thousand dollars this will be worth a lot more to you than whatever else you might purchase.

You should buy a bank cd, and get 4% interest on it.

You can flip it several times then use it for a car or something important. If you leave a cd in a bank for 5 years continuaously flipping it into a new cd every few months then you build credit with the bank. After the five years you can get a loan on the interest made from the cd and the interest you made thereafter will pay off the loan amount. You aren't using your money, it stays in savings and the bank uses your interest made for credit and it pays off your loans while oyu still make money off of it.
