Ok don't freak out but I'm feeding Iams Large Puppy right now. 2 large growing puppies, it gets expensive. It requires almost 4 cups per day. They p**p alot! Dogs p**p less on higher quality food right? Does it require less feeding too? What are some good quality food that may not be so expensive? Canidae, Wellness.....?

  1. Canidae and Wellness are very high quality dog foods! I feed my dog Merrick and Triumph which are also good! I used to feed my dogs pedigree and Alpo before i knew how bad it was for them. YUCK!

To Little s**y-Iams is bad for several reasons, its full of fillers, such as corn which is hard to digest, by products and no nutrition that your dog needs! Plus they are doing cruel test on animals there. Read this

  2. I know what you mean...having 5 dogs, then fostering 1 every other month..I too fed Iams...then switched to Wellness, I think Ive saved $20 a month on dog food

  3. YES!!! the higher quality food makes a great diffrence,  If you  have a Pet Smart near you on saturdays they usually have the reps visit in the stores and give out free samples try them all and see what they like better. and if your store doesnt have the reps visit u can always go to the Vet in the back  and ask they are more than happy to help

  4. Yeah, go to http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_... and compare the different brands.  The higher quality you feed, the less you'll be feeding and Canidae really isn't all that expensive.  Canidae and Wellness, I think are about rated the same.

  5. Go to dogfoodanalysis.com for thorough reviews of various high quality foods.  Canidae is much much better than Iams and isn't as pricey as some of the other brands.  It also depends on what your dogs do well on. I haven't found my dogs to eat much less on higher quality foods than they would on a grocery store brand but it varies from dog to dog.  Ask your pet supply store for samples so you can see how your dogs do on it.

  6. I used to use Canidae for my dogs, but now i use purina for sensitive stomachs because canidae hurt my dog's stomach.

  7. Wellness is an excellent food, and not very expensive at all! They just started carrying it at PETCO. I switched my dog and he is doing SO much better!

  8. What is wrong with Iams? Is there something I should know here, because please clue me in. I am feeding Iams Puppy foor to my pure-bred Boxer pup.

I used to use a brand called Californias Natural, to my Min Pin and she liked it.

  9. Most good quality foods will be more expensive than the cheap stuff that is full of fillers.   But it is money well spent, as your dog is getting better nutrition and they digest it better ( less p**p!).  You can feed less also,  so it doesn't end up as expensive as you think.

I like Solid Gold and Wellness brands - great quality and full of nutrition!

  10. I used to have my german shepherd on Puring ONE, she ate so much of it and pooped a lot. It was like candy to her.

Then I heard that if I put her on a better brand of dog food, she will eat less because it doesn't have as many fillers and c**p and therefore she would p**p less.

I looked at different dog foods and decided to put her on Solid Gold. She at less of it and she pooped a lot less too - which is great:) Solid Gold is a good quality food with many natural ingredient. It is a lamb based food.

    Hope this helps! Good luck!

  11. You are not going to get good quality food cheap, it just doesn't happen. Your dogs p**p alot because of all thew filler garbage in the Iams. Get a higher quality dog food, the p**p wil be less and the dog;'s health will be better.

You have 2 large growing puppies, you proabably should have budgeted in the cost of food before you got them. Higher quality food may or may not require less feeding.

I have a 6 month old large breed, she eats 3 cups of Innova puppy food a day.

  12. If you're on a budget, check into Canidae and Chicken Soup. Both are high-quality, but still reasonably priced (roughly $1 per pound).

  13. Yes I would remove them from Iams only because Iams does testing on animals and keeps them in inhumane conditions for that reason alone I refuse to continue my dog on Iams Low-Residue prescription.  I have switched my Weimaraner over to Pinnacle Holistic food due to sensitive stomach and the Lab over to Avoderm Natural.  Do not purchase Canidae, a while back yes, Canidae was a good food, however, Diamond now produces Canidae and Diamond had the most deaths during the pet food recall and I hear they've changed the formula of Canidae.

Pinnacle Holistic or any Holistic food would be better than Canidae, I hear that Timberwolf is an excellent food especially if you have a dog with food allergies.  Pinnacle is 100% allergen free and contains no wheat, corn or fillers.

Yes, they are supposed to p**p less on higher quality food, but my lab pooped more on Canidae than my Weim did on Iams.  You can also feed less of a higher quality brand because they don't need as much.

  14. If you use a cheap food you will probably use more to get the same satisfaction but I was told (having 2 labs) that sometimes the more expensive foods can have too much protein in and make your dogs bones grow too quickly and big dogs should have an under 25% protein diet and 2 x calcium bonio per day. We have been doing this and seems to be working fine. As for the p**p - the larger number of times you feed per day the more p**p. At 4 months you can cut down to 3 times a day and at 6 months just twice.
