  1. How could you even think of going into this business if you have no idea of what to charge?

For normal construction if you estimate at double the materials plus 10% it's a starting point.

  2. If you are experienced in this profession, you will already know what the going rates are for each job, based upon location, safety issues, cost of materials, and time to complete the job.

If you are just starting, I would suggest that you work with a dock company first to learn the ropes and get a feel for what each job may bring.  It is not always easy or even safe, and the equipment purchases and maintenence can be expensive as well.

You will also need to be sure you are abiding by all of the local/state laws concerning the environment and wetlands or you can face some pretty hefty fines.  You also have to factor in the cost of your insurance.

You will want to call a few dock companies in your area to find the going rates, and decide based on your degree of experience what you should charge from there.

The professional dock companies in my area tend to charge $50/hr per person, and materials X 1.5-2.5, but most customers will want a total quote for the whole job, so you best know your business pretty well and know how much it will cost up front.

  3. well..... for starters I would call other places like that an see what they would charge..and then you can base your pricing on how good and fast of a service you would do.... I fix trolling motors- the best in the area an the fastest- thats because I did my homework an seen what everyone else was doing.. right an wrong- I seen what the people / fisherman were looknn for.... Just look into what your trynnn to do.....good luck buddy....................

  4. Call others who do this sort of work and ask what they charge.
