Question:

What should I choose a right side hitter or a setter?

I've been playing volleyball for about eight years now and I'm going into ninth grade. I don't know how I got into being a setter, but that's what I've been doing for my whole volleyball career. Just this last year I've been playing setter and right side. I've been training and I have been getting a lot of kills and I'm pretty strong. I really want to play right side because I love the adrenaline rush that you get when you kill the ball. The only thing is that there are tons of hitters in our program and it might be harder to make the higher team that I want to make. Do you guys have any suggestions?

  1. Well, if there are alot of hitters and if there are people better than you and you think you may not start as a hitter, play as setter..

I have dislocated my shoulder 4 times..

I'm a very strong hitter.. I always serve and I get kills..

I started playing right, then was moved to left, and I currently play middle.

It really does hurt your shoulders or you could break your ankle..

So being a hitter is a more dangerous position..

Maybe if there is another setter, you could play a 6-2

6 hitters, 2 setters.. and have a backrow setter.

That way, you can set when you are in back row.

And you can hit when your in front row..

It's always good to mix up your positions..

  2. Talk with the coach(es).  There are many options for you out there, like running a 4-2, which is having four position players and two setters.  This allows one setter to either (A) set from the back row, or (B) allow a second setter who can hit a chance to hit.  If you're a great setter, then don't mess that up.  The more you can do in volleyball the better, because college's will be looking for multi-talented players.

  3. you can do both if your team does the 6-2 rotation. this rotation has 2 setters and 6 hitters, so meaning the 2 setters are also hitters. talk to your coach about it.
