What should I definitely see if I visit Taiwan?

I have a friend in Taiwan who has offered to let me stay at his house if I visit. I'm seriously considering it. I understand you can tour the whole island by bicycle, and that's my speed. But what should I make sure to see and do while I'm there? What's not to miss?

  1. Hi,

    Are you under 30yrs>>

People have cycled around the island.

You can get some ideas from this site:

  2. Don't bike around the island.  The entire West coast is a shithole, and  most of the route on the East coast is a busy dual carriageway with four lanes of traffic and constant construction. People here drive like maniacs, and there's no proper policing if things go wrong.

    Give it a miss.

  3. I suggest visiting the biggest city,Taipei, and east Taiwan is enough.

Taipei is in the name of the modernization of Taiwan.

East Taiwan stands for the natural beauty in Taiwan.

    In Taipei,

Taipei101 is one of the important spot that you must go.It has a best view in the whole Taipei. And once the tallest building in the world.

National Palace Museum, which collects much more Chinese pressures than Beijing's.Every foreigner can't miss it.

These are the most important spots that you can go.You can just walk around the Taipei streets and enjoy the feelings.

East Taiwan,Taroko National Park has one of the most beautiful scenery in Taiwan. It is easy to talk.Talking does nothing. You have to experience it by yourself.

I can just tell you the main place that you should go.

If you still have a lot of time, you can go to the other three biggest cities,Taichung,Tainan and Kaohsiung.

Taking "high speed rail" will be more convenient to arrive at the next city.

By the way,Taiwan's food is famous. You can go down to Tainan and its snacks are great. If you don't have enough time,You can find it in Taipei's" Shih-lin night market",too.

  4. Where does your friend live, and how much time do you have?  We cannot really answer your question without knowing that.

Taiwan might look small, but touring the country by bicycle is VERY ambitious.

It would be better to go by train, and rent a motorbike when you get to the destination--except in the three biggest cities of Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung.  It is foolhardy for an inexperienced visitor to brave the traffic in any of the three.

  5. Hualien is definately a beauty. It is the city that specializes in a Taiwanese Mua Chi too (the Japanese mochi).

The Strange Shores of Keelung are also beautiful. You can see the strange shapes of rocks that used to be the bottom of the ocean, including the Head of the Egyptian Queen. Just don't go in the afternoon when it's the hottest.

Taipei 101, definately go up to the top. It's worth it.

Just experience the everyday Taiwanese culture! It's a thing to behold! The street markets (morning and night), the shopping malls, cuisine, etc.
