What should I do, my rat's tail is badly hurt?

I put the rat in the cage and its tail got trapped in the door, the skin and flesh came off the tail at the end (about an inch long) all that remains now is bone and (i think) muscle. It is incredibly sensitive now and she screams if anything touches it. We have wrapped it in bandage and separated her from the other rat.

she is 1 year old and it happened last night, please help.

  1. I'd take her to the vet's. they'll have an expert opinion on it ... sorry if this dnt help much =]

  2. Get the poor thing to the vets right away! It sounds like her tail has *degloved* which is a painful and serious problem. Her tail will need to be treated, cleaned and the best solution for curing it decided on - and this may mean an amputation of the tail. She desperately needs some pain killers and protection against infection so please get her to the vets as soon as possible! You did the right thing separating her from the other rats who may've tried to clean her tail and make it worse, but this is beyond your care now, and she needs professional help.

For future, always make sure that the rat is fully in the cage before you close the door and make sure there are no small holes between the door and the bars that she could get her tail stuck in again

  3. go to the vet

    go to the vet

    go to the vet

    infection

    infection

    infection

    did you get that?

  4. She needs to see a vet to have the remainder amputated so it doesn't get infected. It won't regrow, it needs to be removed.
