Question:

What should I do about a propane tank that's too full?

I got a new 5 lb propane tank for my grill, and took it to the local gas station to get filled. The attendant who filled it wasn't paying attention and overfilled it (it registered just over 5 lbs, and gas was visibly escaping from what I assume is a relief valve of some sort). I've read everywhere that overfilled tanks can be dangerous, but what's the best way to correct it before hooking it up to the grill? Do I just open the valve and let some out (in a wide-open area, of course), and if so, how much (how long should I leave the valve open)? It's supposed to be in the 90's this weekend, and I'm also concerned about the the liquid not having room to properly expand inside the tank.

I'm new to grilling, and don't want to become one of those "exploding grill" statistics that I keep hearing about. Any information you can provide for this newbie would be appreciated. Thanks! :)

  1. take it back and talk to the manager about the employee!! do not try to release this yourself,, that much pressure could blow out the regulator and then you will have a big fire ball,,, ask the manager to check your regulator for damage!! he will be liable if it blows up!!!  do not let him charge you for any of this..........

  2. I cook, heat, and grill with propane, my bottles run from 30lbs. to the large 20gal.  once in a while they overfill one of mine. The safety will release the excess pressure. I have learned to keep them out of direct sun lite. Heat'em up and the pressure goes up fast. when that garlicky smell hits you you know one fresh-filled bottle is in the sun. they are very safe just don't let the rust worms gnaw on them. Now I'm hungry!

  3. The relief valve is there to make sure it doesn't get overfilled. It would have let out the excess propane. You're good! Have a Barbecue!

  4. If you want to be absolutely sure and safe take the tank back to the station and let them bleed it off.

  5. The new tanks are much safer for this very reason. It actually cannot be overfilled.  It's normal for the gas to blow off when it's finished filling.  Furthermore, the new tanks are specifically designed to blow off pressure when they get hot.

    I.e., don't worry.

P.S. I'm assuming you're in the U.S.  I don't know if all other english-speaking countries have the newer tanks too.
