My daughter (17) bought a car (clear title according to DMV) from a lady. She got a receipt and paid the remaining $ she owed. I talked to the lady and she asked what tag agency we were going to. The lady never showed up. I have a cerrtificate of title and the registration plus the tag. The lady told me not to bother her she was calling the cops and taking me and my daughter to court for harrassment. She kept telling me that all i needed was the receipt and i told her that we both had to go get it transfered to me. She is saying that because of us her license is suspended and she had to pay $150 in fines. I have locked all her rude text comments in my phone just incase. I have been very polite till now when she called me an idiot and was pressing charges

  1. If you have the certificate of title and she signed it over to you, you do not need her to register the car in your name and apply for a new title in your name.  All you have to do is pay the sales tax and give the DMV the paperwork.  That's why she thinks you are harassing her.

  2. Go here, http://www.judgejudy.com/#/submityourcas...

  3. I would put a mechanics lean on her car. That way the car is titled to you until she either hands over the title or refunds your money.

  4. let her press charges - and then file a counter claim for the court fees and title fees etc.-  explain to the judge that you had been trying to be nice etc.. long and short of it is - she will lose and she will have to pay for all the court fees and make good on the title change.

  5. Have to agree with oklatom, call her bluff and get the police involved.  She can call them names all the way to jail if it ends up being a scam

  6. Cars are sold by title.  If you didn't get one when you bought the car, you have been scammed.  Invite her to press charges, that you would love to discuss with the police and the court system how she scammed you out of your money without ever giving you a clear title.  The receipt, as you found out, will do you no good.  Contact her once more and let her know if you don't get the title from her that you will be taking HER to court to get your money back.

  7. Go to the police.

  8. When you pay off a car you get the title. Sounds like the lady doesn't know what she is talking about. Have a lawyer call her and  let her in on the secret of buying cars, the title means ownership!
