Question:

What should I do about my boss?

I have been working at my job for 6 years. I transferred to the accounting department in the agency I work for. At first my boss and I ( which is a male in his late 50's) got along great. Last year the agency had down sized our department from 7 people to just two. It's apparently me, and another male worker. Lately, my supervisor, has been very disrespectful to me.

Here's a couple of examples:

My supervisor gives me the most responsibility then my co-worker. My co-worker is a different nationality, and he's deliberately rude!

My co-worker gets mad at my supervisor, but yet seem to want to take his frustration out on me. I told my supervisor, and my supervisor told me to talk to him. When trying to talk to him he walked away!

so two weeks ago he slammed binders on the overhead shelves causing two of the 5 inch binders to almost fall on my head. I asked my co-worker his problem, and he rudely told me that people see the binders and don't fix them back properly. Mind you I don't go over his desk, and the day before I was out. I feel that he was angry at my boss, but took it out on me. When I told my boss the situation, casually he told me that he'll talk to him. But I (feeling uncomfortable, and working in a hostile environment) took it to the director of Human resources. My supervisor has been very disrespectful to me before this. He talks to me as if I am a child, and he asks as if I am his secretary.

Example:

He gave me an evaluation that stated that my filing is unacceptable. Meanwhile the office had gone under renovations causing me to relocate each file 3 X's he told me that if he was to search for certain voucher's he wouldn't be able to locate them. So I fixed the files correctly after the evaluation, and put them accordingly to the services that they belonged. I took a mental health day, and when I returned I had work on my desk from him. I asked him what were the papers on my desk, and he told me that they were vouchers. Well I told him that the covers to those vouchers were in the file cabinet according to the service. He told me that he knew that but he'd rather waited for me to get them because he didn't want to be bothered. Even when he tried to use my computer to down load a CD. He didn't ask me politely to get up from my seat. He said "Get Up!" I am trying to hold my composure to not tell this old geezer off, because I know I'll be written up for insubordination. How should I confront him with his rudeness, without being rude? I am due back to work on Monday, and I don't want to deal with his c**p, especially after returning to work after a car accident. What should I do?

  1. Talk to your HR department, if your company has one.

If not, then you'll have to bear with the scenario for a while. Your colleague who is angry with your boss shouldn't be holding onto this job for long. He'd jump at the first opportunity if he has another job offered to him.

As for your boss, you'll just have to bear with it. No company will dismiss the supervisor to make the subordinate happy. And sometimes people are too stubborn or ego to change and I suppose your supervisor is one of them.

Your boss' rude behavior could be a result of his personal problems (ie. marriage problems, health problems, financial problems) and so the behavior could be temporary until he solves his personal problems. I know it's not professional to bring personal problems to work but in life these things do happen.
