Question:

What should I do about my room?

This year, I'll need to concentrate really hard on school because I almost failed last year. Plus I made a promise to myself that all throughout high school, I need to give it my all and get the grades I should be getting.

And I want to redo my room because it's so dark and miserable. All I have is a bed, a TV, and a dresser. The walls have dark wood panels on them, and the carpet is navy/black with a light pink, tan, and green floral design.

So my room is very dark and hard to concentrate in. The only place I have to sit is my bed. There are no chairs or anything, not even a desk. The only problem is, we're kind of stuck. We're supposed to be moving, but that could take a year, maybe less. When school starts, I'm gonna need a desk. I can't do my homework on my bed (it's somehow unhealthy) and I can't do it at the kitchen table (too many people there). I really have no alternative.

So my real question is, should I redo my room to make it more welcoming and efficient? Or should I wait until we move, which may not happen for a while?

If you think I should, what are some really cheap ways to improve it? Where can I get a cheap desk, preferably with shelves or lots of drawers?

Thanks so much!!

  1. If you think it might take a while, you should go ahead and do it. And with the way it sounds, re-doing your room may help in selling your house. I dont think I would do anything crazy with the walls, but just lighten it up a bit. I think that painted paneling actually looks nice. The bottom portion of my kitchen walls was that ugly wood paneling, and we painted it and it looks awesome! It gives the walls texture and you still get the color that you want. You can pick up a desk at a yard sale, or check craislist.com and you can find people in your area selling things for cheap! I think a desk and a better room would help you get your mind on your school work, you should go for it!

  2. Hm.... well, the best place to look for inexpensive furniture (if you don't mind it being used) is Craigslist.com.  Check if they have a page for your city.  People give away or sell all kinds of things really cheap, and most of the time, it's in good shape. As for the walls, is painting an option?  Changing the color of the walls can drastically improve the look.  If you can't paint, find some nice wall hangings or curtains to brighten up the space.  These are all things you can do and if you guys move you can always take the stuff with you.  Go ahead and do it now, especially if you think it will help you have a peacful place for schoolwork.  Good luck!
