What should I do about this?

O.K., this is what's going on with my mom. I want to be in band, and think that if were to apply for a competitive college that it would help me out in being accepted. But the thing is, my mom doesn't want me to be in that class. So if you can, please tell me what I can tell her that can change her mind about letting me be in that class (and do everything that the class requires me to do). And if you're going to answer "listen to your mother", you're and idiot. Thanks a lot.

  1. Its really not her decision unless she's paying for it. If she is, tell her this is your passion and she needs to give you a chance to prove her wrong. Promise if things don't go right you will drop the class in time to get some kind of refund. Just make sure you do the right thing b/c if you don't you will never live it down. Hopes this helps!!

  2. just tell her that its better for college and swear at her lol just kiddin

  3. Colleges do like to see that you are well rounded. People also tend to pout way too much emphasis on it. The most important thing is having good grades in classes that matter. I go to a small state college and there wasn't even a place on the application for extracurriculars. As for the competitive ones that will look at it, a student with extracurriculars with a C average because they are doing to much extra stuff looks worse than an A or B student who had no extracurriculars. If taking band means missing a more important class, then your mom may be right. If it means giving up a junk course that is just filling up  and your mom just doesn't want to listen to you practice, then try and work something out with your mom so she doesn't make your life miserable. Talk to your guidance counselor to see what they recommend. If you really like band, its worth more than the grade too. School is important, but as long as you aren't doing something that will mess up your future (and I really doubt taking band over spanish would) you should also do things for fun.

  4. Get a job and apply for student loans.  Pay your own way through college and then it won't matter what your mom thinks.

    Just an idea.
