Question:

What should I do about this situation at the local gas station?

I go to the same gas station every day to buy cigarettes. They know me and they know what kind of cigarettes I like. They are very friendly.

Anyway, the manager thinks my name is James when actually it is Brian. She always calls me James and I corrected her once a long time ago and told her that my name is Brian, but I guess she didn't hear me because she still calls me James. So, she has been calling me James for about two years now. How can I tell her my name is Brian without embarrasing myself or her?

  1. go in wearing a name tag that says "Hello my name is... Brian"

  2. Tell her you legally changed your name to Brian. or you can bring a friend with you next time you buy cigarettes & have him call your name when your at the counter to ask you a dumb question like do you prefer Jack Link's over Slim Jim.

It's worked for me before. Just remember to make sure she's there that day.

  3. I'd call her by another name and when she corrects you I'd say oh! I'm sorry Jim told me it was ____  .... I'm Brian.... glad to meet you.... then say her right name.... no one else will know the difference.....

  4. look her straight in the eye and call her something other than her name. if she corrects you, you can correct her.

  5. make this whole plot and have someone go in there with you and while you go to the counter have them go to the drinks and call "Hey Brian" and you have to answer maybe get them to say your name a few more times to "get your attention" and ask what kind of drink you want. (and yes the next thing is stealing Priscilla 101's idea) And where the "Hello my name is BRIAN" name tag.

you have to post what you end up doing.

  6. When I first saw the question, "What should I do about this situation at the local gas station?," I thought you were ready to start the Revolution. :-) LOL . It almost sound like lyrics from a Rage Against the machine song. LOL

Maybe we should take to the streets - devote a weekend next month to protesting these high gas prices, and arguing that our local governments should devote a portion of the budget to local start-up biofuel enterprises - it will create jobs in that industry, which is good for local people, and help provide downward pressure (although not immediate relief) on gas prices. Make our world a better place.

That's what I would do about the situation at the local gas station.

  7. I'd just let her keep calling me James.  What's the harm?  It's kind of funny.  Besides, correcting her after 2 years is going to be kind of awkward and embarassing no matter how you do it.  Why bother?
