well I let my buddy use my outboard... long story short he didn't run 50:1 in it. just regular gas. he said it quit after about 20 min. he restarted it, and run it back slow. soooo... what should I do? just put my tank on it and run the 50:1 or do I have to take it in?

  1. Run it with 50:1 mixture. If you have doubts about its integrity, do a compression check. It only takes approximately 60 psi for a motor to run depending on your motor. If your cylinder compression ratio is within 10% of each other, you are fine.

DO NOT use Slick 50 or any chemical additive like that in an outboard motor or any motor for that matter.

  2. Drew, I would squirt a little oil in each cylinder, and turn the engine over a few times. If it turns over freely, you have escaped the worst scenario-a frozen engine. If it doesn't, take it to the dealer with your buddy's check-book. I assume that you DID tell him how to mix the gas/oil.

You should look into using Slick-50, or one of the other products that put coatings on your cylinder walls to cut down friction.

  3. it wont last much longer, those pistons would have scored the cylinders man, get it repaired, don't damage it any more by running it.

  4. Pick out a new motor and make your buddy buy it.  Get a 4-stroke....why not?  Your buddy seems clueless enough to not know the difference.

  5. If he didn't run the motor at high speed, you might be alright. If the motor still turns over I think you are golden. When you put it up for the winter have your mech. look at it. There is an inspection plate that you can remove and look at the pistons to see if they are burnt. Good luck.

  6. Take it to the shop and send him the bill... We are talking THOUSANDS here.

My dad had a good rule of thumb:

Never lend anything that has a engine. Car, truck, boat, lawn mower, gas powered weed eater, generator, chain saw, etc...

Electric motor things were ok to loan, drill, skill saw, electric weed eater, etc...

Ignorance is often unforgiving and expensive. Your buddy needs to pay for the repairs.
