What should I do at the gym before hitting the snowboard slopes?

Hey!

I'm heading out to snowboard in july (southern hemisphere!) I've never boarded before and really wanted to make the best of it all from the second I hit the slopes...

What type of workouts should I do at the gym the months before heading out to the mountains? Cardio or strength training? If so which muscles should I target?

I'd appreciate all your advice and help!

Thanks

  1. endurance training on quads, hip flexors, calves and obliques/ab core

  2. snowboarding is pretty chill so you really dont need to work out that much before going. if you really feel you need to the work on your thighs. as for cardio, mine is horrible and ive never gotten really tired and believe me i ride hard.

if you really want to train as a beginning snowboarder then what you need to do is randomly fall down while bboth walking and standing still because for your first three days if you dont get used to it now your going to then.

  3. Target your thighs.  squats are great.

    Good luck!

  4. do some squats but don't overwork your thighs because they'll hurt like no other with that combined with the day of boarding. Also make sure to stretch your shoulder muscles before you board cuz if you fall you need to be able to move your arms quickly and not hurt the muscles

  5. thighs!!!  its a killer!!!

these are some great suggestions (courtesy of about.com). i would strongly suggest lots of core exercises. this really helps with balance and stability.

cardio is good too so you can get your body use to constantly be moving.

i would also suggest squat jumps. they really target the quads and glutes.

as weird as it seems, yoga would be really good to take up awsell. i tried it and it worked out great.

  7. don't worry to much about what to train for ect its not that bad, you enjoy snowboarding so much you just ignore it

the worst part about going for the first time is falling on your butt.. i remember my first time the worst thing was falling over.. your first week you'll just master the turns and maybe get on a blue slope (if your lucky)

skiing is the main one you need to train for i'd say because it kills your legs

    : )

  8. build up the padding on your butt cause that's what you're going to be spending most of your time on.

  9. I think maybe your preparation should go into gear rather than training. I know you want to make the most of your holiday but at the end of the day, the learning process is pretty painful. Even if you do pick it up very quickly (which i have seen many people do) your bottom will hurt and your calves for sure. Buy some padding for your bottom and knees and some wristguards. If you are going to attempt to do some moves, then i think probably a helmet as well.

Not sure where in the Southern Hemi you're off to, but i live in Australia and go boarding every season and sometimes when you are out of luck, we hardly get much snow up top and down below, its sprayed. That means its pretty icy up top and hard packed... hurts more when you fall over. Even if it only happens once or twice... you will feel it for most of the trip, so pack some heal gel/cooling gel as well. You might want to spread that stuff on if you wanna get up the second morning =D

  10. you train for shredding?

    ha.

    ha.

    ha.

    HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAAAAAA

    okay look.

the whole point of snowboarding is that it's a sport where you don't need any training ****.

it was made for people who didn't want to be judged, who didn't want to have regular training times and coaches, who just wanted to get out there and have fun, who don't want to take life in general too seriously.

the best way to get ready? watch some videos and chill

  11. I would recommend strength training with free weights. Do squats both with dumb bells and barbells. Training with these types of weights will not only strengthen your legs but also will increase your balance and strengthen the muscles that help with balance. You could also do some push ups and bench press to help with your chances with the ladies in the lodge.
