What should I do during my first evening visiting Rome?

I am traveling to Rome, arriving at my hotel (near the Spanish Steps) around 4:30pm. After I check in, what should I do?

I want to absorb the culture in a relaxing way. I was going to hang out at the Trevi Fountain but I think I'd like to see that in the morning before seeing it illuminated at night.

I am traveling as a young single female so safety is important. I'm not a party girl, so I am not interested in bars or clubs.

Is there a nice safe place relatively near where I am staying where I can relax after a long flight?

  1. Eat.  Find the first half way decent place and just eat.  It will set the whole mood for the trip.  You'll get good service, good food, you will be so happy.

  2. Go for a stroll around the area. The Spanish steps is within easy walking distance to the Trevi Fountain, which I think you should see at night as it is so much more beautiful!! (and there are less tourists.)

You will be safe as a lone female, especailly in that area. I live in Rome and the area around the Spainsh steps, although very tourists, it is very posh too with all of the designer shops. You could even get a take away gelato and sit on the Spanish steps and watch the world go buy...Or if you are tired head to one of the little bars and get yourself an espresso. There are many bars, restaurants, cafes etc...near where you will be staying so you will not have to go far at all.

    Have a great time!

  3. Go to 'via Condotti' for a coffè or an ice-cream (gelato). It's the street of 'La Dolce Vita' by Fellini!
