What should I do first to open up a bookstore?

Having helped someone who was finding this difficult I would say start collecting books by putting up notices, go to the car boot sales, then try going round older bookshops looking for bargains that you could reprice. Your shop needs to be full, if you can't fill it with books then get a greeting cards wholesaler who only wants commission, you could do this as well with getting a picture framer etc. all the best, oh and don't open up near a charity shop because all the books get donated to them rather then you!!!

Why not contact your local Chamber of Commerce to get the word out of your grand opening.  Perhaps have a grand opening ceremony as well?
