  1. What should you do? Well, if you're worried about somebody going through your trash and finding it, then you should tear it into tiny pieces first (or run it through your shredder, if you have one).

You should also definitely have a conversation with the merchant and explain the realities of life to them -- that printing that information on their receipts is a violation of privacy -- and may even be against the law (I'm not sure whether it's federal law or just state). A reputable merchant will hopefully listen to you and change their procedures.

  2. tell the merchant that the must update as the numbers except the last 4 must be masked out ---law

  3. It seems a little odd that they would do that.  But you know way back when before they processed credit cards via computer they would take a carbon copy of the front of your credit card.  It would take all the information that is in raised lettering, which includes your card number and expiration date, and would make three copies.  One of those copies was for the store, one for the CC company and the other was your receipt.  And I know from working in retail that some places will still do that if their computers fail.  It's not as big of a deal as you think it is.  Just keep careful track of your receipts, don't throw it in the garbage without shredding it first.

  4. Complain to the merchant; this is just begging for identity theft.  I'd also complain to your local BBB, and ask that the merchant pay for a credit monitoring service for you.

Invest in a shredder; shred EVERYTHING that has anything that could remotely be used against you.  The 27 credit card applications you get each week- shred them.  Magazine offers- shred them.  Old bills- shred them.  Canceled cheques...same thing.  Look at a piece of paper; if your name, address, phone number is on it...shred it.

  5. What do you mean on your receipt....for a purchase?

You could just scribble out the info to keep it private. If it's a merchant that you use regularly...contact them and tell them not to and/or mask the information...they should know better than that.
