What should I do in the event of a detour on the expressway.?

My husband and I were traveling back home from out of state yesterday and when we got about an hour from home we hit a detour. We were supposed to take 69 W for 2 miles to get on to I-75 N, however, the 69W ramp was closed and there was a detour that took us off the freeway and back on about 20 miles out of our way. The detour had taken us too far to get onto the 75 ramp that we needed. Luckily we were able to take back roads home (a 15 minute trip on the freeway took 1.5 hours on the back roads).

What should I do in the future in situations like this? This (detours) is the exact reason why I refuse to drive alone on the expressway.

  1. Have an alternate route planned actually have a few that way if ones closed you can take the next one and make it home in a reasonable amount of time.

  2. Thats what maps are for.

  3. Detours on the road are inevitable, unfortunately.  A little prior planning can make your trip much easier.  Start by having your route mapped out & written down on a piece of paper that you can reach prior to setting out on your trip & have your road atlas or state map handy, as well.  Go check out state dept of transportation websites or visitors information centers at some rest areas for latest construction updates  Watch message boards for road information.  Trip tiks from AAA can help as well..  Write notes down that you can carry with you on what you find.

If your exit is closed, due to construction, look to see if the other side is opened, then go to the next available exit, get off, crossover, & go back the other way to that ramp.  If that won't work, grab your map & look for an alternative route, like a state route or major street that crosses the road you need.  As long as you aren't pulling a trailer or driving a commercial vehicle, it shouldn't be much of a problem.  If closure is due to an emergency situation, like an accident, ask the person directing traffic how to get back to the road you need.

Detours during "orange barrel" season are a part of life on the road.  It is part of the challenge. At least look on the bright side, you had extra time to spend with your husband & you had an adventure to tell your friends & family.
