What should I do my 5year old does not like to color?

He is fine just because he doesnt have interest that you think he should have doesn't mean he isn't normal. No kids really learn to color color until they're about 6 or 7. Just be patient he'll come around sooner or later.

If they are not drawing representational art at all, can they write the letters, their name, have they begun to read? Could simply be a developmental delay and nothing to worry about.

Coloring in the lines is not an appropriate activity for a small child.  I don't think most boys like to color.  They seem to enjoy gross motor activites more.  

Encourage him to draw large objects.  Sing 5 little pumpkins sitting on the gate.  Then have him draw 5 pumpkins and each decorate them into jack-o-laterns.

Have him draw what he does each day (eat, play, at school, in the car)  

The "scribble" might be something very important to him ask him to tell you about his "art".  Also to let him know how important his "art" is to you ask him to give you a title for the art and use a marker to write about what he tells you on the paper.

just  express  art  to  him  in  a  different  watt  such  as  finger  paining  or  looking  at  something  very  colorful  and have  him  express his  feelings towards the art

well, like some have said, it's age approriate for him to prefer scribbling to colouring. not too much of a worry. you may however like to introduce other mediums. like paint, crayons, magic pens, or anything to your child's likings. so that he may develop a fancy for colouring. most importantly, do not rush him or he may just hate the idea. you may try to expose him to different arts. hope all goes well.

Co-ordinating the hand and eye is not an easy task. Most kids don't develop this skill as early as the age of 5. Looking back at the colouring books that I preserved, I realised that my first set of presentable pictures were colored in at the age of 6 or 7. This is the same with all children. Just encourage your child to keep scribbling, you never know when a Picasso might emerge!

for a 5 year old scribbling IS their coloring. Coloring is a way children express themselves in their own way. Thats why coloring books are not a good thing for kids. Even daycares are not aloud to use them in their curriculum. They are encouraged to give the child a peice of plain paper instead so they can create their own masterpeice. Dont push it. your child will not always scribble. Instead encourage and reward. They see something that we dont.

Leave him alone. Some kids are just not interested. Find other ways to use his small muscles like scissors, play dough , Lego, puzzles or building with small blocks. Offer him a variety of art materials including markers. Not every child is interested in Art.

This is perfectly fine!  Scribbling is an initial stage in learning to write (and to draw) and is an important part of literacy.  In your child's mind, those scribbles mean something and your child thinks that you understand what it says.  You can try asking your child, "Can you tell me what you wrote? or Can you tell me about your drawing?" and you will gain insight into your child's scribbles.  The scribbles will eventually begin to look more like letters or something more recogizable.  

Children are still developing their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination at this stage.  A great way to help him is to try using various materials that he may scribble with, such as sidewalk chalk, markers, crayons, and you may even give him a paint brush to "scribble" with if these things interest him.  He will most likely start coloring eventually.  Just remember, all children have different interests, so let him explore and discover what really intrigues him, and then use that as a means to expand his learning.  Believe it or not, your child is expressing himself/herself through those scribbles!

My son is 5, He only colors when he is:

1) In the mood

2) others are coloring too.

So, get out a coloring book and color with them, make it a family activity. And, remeber that if they start out scribbling, the just keep on encouraging them to get better. If they have a bad day, think about it you have days you don't  feel like doing things either.

My daughter did the same thing until she was 7.She would always scribble and never color good.Then after she started second grade she gave me a picture she colored and it was perfect.I did not know she could color like that.I just let her decide when she was ready to color.Do not force your child to color better.Let them decide when they want to do it.I let my daughter decide when she is ready for anything.I was worried alot about her too.

Take him to the store and have him pick out his own coloring book. Tell him that if he does his best job, you will frame it and put it on his wall. This may encourage him to color. Even at this, most of it will be scribbling. It is developmentally appropriate to scribble vs color. I would be conserned if he can't write. There is no consern with no coloring. Good luck.
