2 days ago my hamster, Charlie died. He was my first ever hamster and he only lived for 4 months. (i feel so guilty.. =[) but i keep blaming myself, because he escaped from his cage, and hid behind the washing machine, and when we found where he was hiding, there was a hole that led outside. ='[ i could tell it was him because there was lots of food there.. i don't know what to do... should i get another hamster? now is just too soon.. =[ help please.

  1. These things happen and you cannot blame yourself. When our hamster died we waited a while and then today we bought new hamsters. It is great to have them. You don't have to replace them but bring a new bundle of joy into their cage :) You can't blame yourself for your hamster escaping

    :)

  2. i felt guilt too but don't blame yourself it happens to everyone at some time or another...my hamster died May 1[i buried her]

I didn't want to get one too soon cause that would be sort of like replacing her...after a while i thought about getting another one but i decided to go for a different pet, a Guinea pig...they are lovable and like to cuddle and will talk in their language to you...they can be trained to use a litter box and do simple tricks...i would just research all pets you might be interested in and then narrow it down to the one that best suits you...it might be a hamster in which case it is great cause you already have supplies and all...i am currently trying to get 2 guinea pigs...ohh yeah if you decide on a guinea pig you have to et 2 and think about making a C&C cage their website is http://www.guineapigcages.com/ thanks hope i helped!!

  3. If you are thinking about getting another hamster, I would suggest that you cope with the loss of Charlie, give it a few months. And don't blame yourself, it was just an accident.

  4. Sorry about your hamster. It is totally up to you what you do next, if you feel it is to soon, then it is. Fortunately, my first hamster is still living, but I know I would burry my hamster with something from his cage and some bedding. You shouldn't blame yourself, you didn't do anything wrong. If you do get another hamster, maybe consider another cage that is more escape proof.

  5. I havent had a hamster that died but if you want another then maybe you could learn a lesson from charlie! you need to make sure his cage is properly secure! what cage was it? it might not be that he was trying to escape he probably saw the oppertunity to see outside of his cage and went for it like you dont stay inside your house because theres a door he probably thought you wanted him out dont blame yourself!! I think you should get another hamster in about two months and make it a tribute to charlie maybe call him charlie then make sure his cage is properly secure at all times give him lots of toys and treats and maybe even a friend shut all the doors! especially if you lose the new one so that you can search high and low and get that hole removed and QUICK hope this helps!!

  6. Don't blame yourself. Those things happen and sometimes even when you are very careful, accidents are still possible. Compared to my story, yours is nothing. I had a cat one time and he got under the axle of my mom's car. She went to the store to get some groceries. On the way there, nothing happened so apparently he held on until she was on her way back and then she felt a big thump. Then she realized it was our cat. If he had just held on for about 10 more minutes he would have been okay. My mom of course, felt really bad about it because we really loved that cat. But the only way my mom could get her mind off of it was to get a cat that looked similar to him. My mom and I felt better after that and we loved the second cat just as much!

  7. Very sorry about your hamster. If i was you i would not go get one right away. I would give it time and see if your ready to get another hamster again.

    R.I.P Charlie

  8. maybe you should wait awhile to recover... but it is your choice completely.

what you can do is buy a little wooden box from the dollar store, put him in there and bury him somewhere nice and peaceful.

  9. I had to bury my hamster, Fuzz. :(  We had him for 4 years! But, at least he lived a good life, right? Okay, you should bury him, and just wait for a little, because that's like replacing him. Just wait another month, and then get a new one. I have not bought another hamster, because I just got a puppy, and you know, I don't want to replace him or anything.

Rest in Peace, Charlie...and you too, Fuzz!

  10. OMG i am so sorry when my hamster chester died, i was SOOO sad! do whatever you feel is best, wait until you are ready to get another hamster. remember all the good times you had with your hamster and get over the sadness, then go get another hamster that looks nothing like charlie, so you can eliminate all bad feelings. you might even consider getting a different type of pet

  11. Any death is hard to deal with...even a hamsters.

i used to breed hamsters, so I've had about fifty of them or more.

when i got my first one it died a week later from what is known as ''wet tail'' all i could do was bury it. I got a new hamster though, and it did make things a little better, since i wasn't too attached to my first.

hamsters, die just like all animals.

it's terrible, but it's something you'll have to live with.

It's not your fault at all.

    please don't blame yourself.

if it's too soon to get a new one, then don't.

you could try a different animal?

  12. Well i had a guinea pig which is very similar to a hamster. She died after 15 days. My last guinea pig lived 4years. I just stopped getting pets for a while. I didn't want my heart to be broken again. After a while I got a dog which I knew would live longer.

  13. celebrate

  14. I was sad when my first hamster died.  I got another one, but it wasn't the same.  I learned something though, having a hamster as a pet is a lesson in loss.  They just don't live very long, even if they don't escape. I finally got to the point where I could have a hamster and enjoy it for a few years but not get torn up when they went to the big habitrail in the sky.

If you decide to try again....here is a good way to catch an escapee.  Get a small trash can. Put fresh greens, like carrot tops or spinach in the can. Build a stairway out of books so the hammie can get up to the edge and get in it. They can't resist the temptation and once they are in, they can't get out.

  15. You know, he could still be alive...Try the old leading seeds trick. Take a bucket that is to deep for a hamster to climb out of. but seeds in it. make a trail of seeds, and stack books into the bucket. He should come.

My little one died a week ago. She was only 1 year and 11 months. I put her in a cardboard box, then put that box into a mold. I put concrete into it, then let it dry for a day, then decorated it the next day with her name. It's a wonderful memorial. I'm getting a new hamster today. It's best to get a new hamster as soon as possible, other wise you'll feel so sad that you'll never get a new one, and you'll feel guilty forever. Good luck! ^-^

  16. i always kept the box that the pet shop owner put them in for us to bring home. then i dug a hole in the garden, placed hammy in the box with some food and bedding and put him in the hole, put soil on the top, and then stuck a stick in the ground, so i knew where they were. i never cried when they died.

  17. well if you feel its too soon then don't get another hamster until the time is right. It isn't your fault that he escaped, so stop blaming yourself. He just wanted to explore more. Did you find the body if not he could be living in the wild. So dont worry there used to that. My hamster hasnt died yet but its two years old. Im sorry about the loss.

    Hope you feel better.

  18. I'm sorry that happened :(. The same thing happened with my hamster, Friskars. She escaped and I'm pretty sure she went outside. She was my first real pet that I actually took care of myself, so it really hurt. If you should get one is entirely up to you: Does it feel bad to not have a hamster with you anymore? Do you really want a new hamster, or just Charlie back? (or both) As for myself, I'm not going to get a new hamster yet.

    Good luck

  19. sorry about your hamster.. i had the same problem (his name was charlie too!) he was a chinese hamster, and i waited a while then got a robo hamster (diddnt like him cuz he bit) but i still miss charlie...... ='{
