Question:

What should I do to check my internet connection before I call the cable company?

I have cable internet and it was working fine last night. My home network is wireless. I'm still receiving a signal from the router, but not connecting to internet. I reset the modem and router then reset the computer and still no internet connection. My cable is still working, so it shouldnt be an outage, and I checked, no outages reported in the area. Any suggestion? I just want to make sure I try all the obvious before I call a tech. Does it matter if I unplug things or just reset? Thanks!

  1. You've done all you need to do. Call the cable company. I get one warning.  My cable modem has 4 green lights on the side. 3 should always be on.  Sometimes i forget to look.  When there are only 2 on,  it's the cable companies job to fix it.   Call them.

  2. maybe you mistakenly disabled your network card. go to control panel, network, right click on ur existing network connection then click properties and check if ur nt card is enabled

  3. I am a tech, and it does make a difference as far as the order of resetting things goes.  It could be a couple of different things that are causing the problem.  First:  Unplug the modem, router, and shut down the computer.  Second:  Plug the modem back in first and wait a minute or two so that the modem can regain a valid IP address.  Third:  After the modem is locked, then power up your router.  Again wait a minute or two and then restart your computer.  This is called a cold reboot.  It is the first step any tech will do.

The only other thing that you personally could do is plug the ethernet cable directly into your pc and then see if you can connect.  Bypass the router completely, if you can connect then it is a problem with your router, which is not part of the cable companies problems.

If the cold reboot does not work, and you can not connect running direct, then call the cable company.  It could be a signal problem, it could be a line fault outside, it could be something as simple as a bad fitting somewhere.  Hope this helps.

  4. So far so good, actually. The tech support rep is going to ask you all those things anyway. ;)

  5. Try plugging the cable modem DIRECTLY to your computer (do not go through the router). If this fails, then your internet isn't working. Try resetting the cable modem a couple more times with it plugged directly into your computer, and then call the cable company if it continues to not work...
