Question:

What should I do to fix my shoulder?

I was biking on wet pavement this morning. My bike tires slipped and I fell, catching myself with my right arm extended underneath me, hand raised.

Predictably, my shoulder hurts now, and I'm wondering where exactly I should ice and what, if anything, else I should do for it.

Movements that hurt:

Pulling my arm across my body.

Extending my arm straight out, hand level with the shoulder.

Reaching up, forward, and down (as if putting something down on a shelf just above your head.

Movements that don't hurt:

Arm in neutral, extending down.

Raising hand in front of me while arm is extended.

Reaching behind me.

Best answer will be very specific (ie, please don't tell to me "ice ur shoulder"). Thanks for your help.

  1. It sounds to me like to injured the back, outer part of your shoulder, like where your back blade is, or the opposite, the left side of your front blade.

Massage your shoulder around with a rough hand. Really dig into your skin. Try to find the area that is most sensitive. Extend your arm infront of you and rest it on something, sit upright on a couch, and ice either the front blade or the underside of the back blade (where the ball of your arm is), whichever is most sensitive. Don't just ice though, rough massage with the ice again, that keeps the blood circulating and swelling down. Do that for 15 minutes, then just relax it in the ice for another 15 minutes.

If it's pulled though, you don't want just ice, you want hot. Put some Icy Hot on it or take a heat patch and stick it on your shoulder. If it still hurts by tomorrow, then perhaps you'd like to get it checked out.

  2. it's probably a muscle problem. You should see you're doctor.

  3. If this happened this morning and your range of motion is deteriorating you could have torn some ligaments. Perhaps a partial dislocation. Take some advil and a hot shower. If you feel better then its probably pulled muscles etc. If not you might want to get it checked out.
