What should I do to join a good high school in Chicago?

Well I'm going to 8th grade this year and during 7th grade my teacher told us it would help us get into a good high school if we did stuff like volunteer at libraries and stuff like that, or join sports programs, stuff like that over the summer. I would like to know if this is true because i have asked various people if you have to and they say no.

Move into that school's area and fit all of their qualifications for entry.
