I'm in college and live in an apartment. A guy about my age (20 years old) came to the door while the maintance guy was fixing my ac. This kid was just wearing street clothes and said he was with some group that helped kids communicate with people and he was trying to sell magazine subscriptions. I wasn't interested and before I made him leave he asked me if I would smoke him out and get him high or if I would give him a beer from the case that was on the table. I told him no and said "what are trying to do, you gotta leave dog" and made him leave. I think he then went to the people upstairs and tried selling them stuff but i'm not sure. The maintance guy said he was probably scoping out the place to see what he could steal and my roomates laptop was sitting out next to the beer. I'm paranoid now I dont want someone to break in and steal any of my stuff especially if my girlfriend is here by herself. This pisses me off I need help in knowing what to do. Please help with advice!!!

  1. get a doormat that says " inturders will be shot on sight"

  2. Remember the basics...keep your windows and doors locked at all times even if you are at home.  For all your doors and windows, you can get extra locks that help prevent people from being able to open them.  If you are on the bottom level, make sure to keep your blinds shut so people can't peek in.

Also remember the simple rule your parents probably taught you, don't open the door for anyone that you don't know and trust.  Even if someone shows up at your door that you have seen around at school, unless you invited them to come over or know them very well and trust them, don't let them in, you can always go outside and talk to them if you feel comfortable in doing so, being in a place where other people are around.

If someone comes around telling you they are there to fix something and you haven't been notified by the complex, tell them they will have to come back later, and verify with the complex they are sending someone over.  They also should be wearing a badge with a number you can call to make sure they are ligit.

  3. get a gun!
