Question:

What should I do when I finally get to Scotland?

I asked before about Scotland (just a few days ago), I was wondering if it would be better to book a cottage before I went or if I should go and stay in a hotel 'til I find one I like? For the period I want to stay ( 6 months), I would like a place that is not touristy, I am not going for vacation, but to relax and do my work. All the places I have looked at online are holiday cottages and because of this they are very expensive to rent. I was wondering if I should just stay in a hotel until I find a house in a small village that I got to view before I decide? Any help would be great.

  1. Of course you should book into a b and b near the area you want. The owner may know cottages you can look at  or someone. Its a small place. You need to see the cottage before you commit.

  2. Have you considered renting a room from someone in Scotland. This would cut your expenditure down.

  3. Under those circumstances it would be better for you to go into a hotel and then find somewhere to stay, though you could look at the site for "Right Move" who advertise property to rent as well as for sale.

Seb has already told you about trying to work here...as an American you would find it extremely difficult to get a work permit and if you do any work here without one....well that is just simply asking for trouble.  Also if you cannot satisfy immigration that you have enough funds to support yourself whilst you are here you simply will not be allowed entry.

Of course though, it goes without saying that if you are here for a holiday/vacation and doing private work for yourself which you will be taking home with you, and it does not involve any money changing hands here, then you will be ok and you will not need a work permit...but you cannot do any writing/art work and then expect to be able to sell it here.  Immigration will undoubtedly ask what the purpose of your visit here is, and they would get awfully suspicious if you told them you were not here for a vacation and then could not produce a work permit.
