I'm a graduate sales executive and I HATE it. It doesn't suit me in any way. I have a 2.1 English Degree, some writing experience, sales experience, basic/ intermediate web design, advanced IT and development skills, a big mouth and a way with words.

I'd love to be a writer, I did my minor in creative writing and media, but I need to earn a decent amount to keep up with my debts, I'm paid 20k now and need at least that much. I'd work freelance but would need a second part time job, what part time work can you get that pays well, how do other freelancers cope?

I could do marketing, web design and copy writing, but I'd probably need more experience, training and money before going it alone.. any ideas??

Thanks so much.

  1. Perhaps putting your CV on Monster jobs.  There aren't many part-time jobs that pay 20k.  Perhaps proof reading from home.  How long you have been in sales you don't say, so it may be too soon to say you hate it.  Or perhaps you are selling something you don't really believe in?  Perhaps a different company.  Just throwing a few ideas at you.  I think you need a brain storming session.

  2. Firstly don't you hate it when people answer to unrelated from the Q's

Is it the work your doing or the atmosphere your in thats making you want to change?

The problem with wanting to be a writer, is that it's seen as easy, when alot give up as off money problems, stress, loose interest etc  Generally writers have a part time job (alot quit their job and depend on their partner)

Is their anything in writing your interested in, .e.g Journalist have a look on connexions, I've searched for some jobs that may be suited for you,  http://www.connexions-direct.com/jobs4u/...

If you do decide to change careers it's most likely you'll start at the bottom, low pay, as no experience, are you currently fixed down with a mortgage? which is why your concerned on the money aspect?

  3. well... i would start off small at first and work at a resteraunt and start off from there and get bigger jobs and bigger and bigger

    well that's just me

  4. I would start at a resturant and keep up the writing so when u finish writing u can take it to a publisher/editor and have them look @ it while u still have ur resturant job to fall on.
