What should I do when my tortoise's shell cracked on the top?

My dog bit my tortoise on the shell and it cracked. He won't take out his head all the way just only a little bit. WhAt should I DO?

Very sorry to hear this.

The answer depends on how bad the break is.  1st thing to note, is do NOT try to squeeze it closed, this could cause a lot more damage. 2nd thing to note is you should probably take him/her to the vet.

If it's a large crack with a wide gap you need to take the turtle to the vet.  They can make sure it's cleaned properly and repaired properly, though its not guaranteed they'll be able to fix it.

Smaller cracks can be fixed at home, but you do run the risk of possible infection by not going to the vet.   If it's a water turtle he needs to be kept out of the water except for a few brief moments a day.  If it's not a water turtle the best thing is to make sure it stays very very clean.  Sterile bandage, changed often, some suggest antibiotic ointment.      

You should know that it takes a very long time for a cracked shell to heal.  You'll have to take very close care of your little guy in changing the dressing and keeping him/her very clean.

Hi, the bad news is your tortoise may have a paranoia of dogs for the rest of the little guys life, some regular vets will fake knowing anything about reptiles or tortoises, but if there is a vet in your area that U trust than take the tort. 2 that vet or reptile specialist. Your first answer has some good suggestions but he doesn't know U have a tortoise, at least according 2 his answer. The most important thing is 2 remain com, if u heed this advice than hopefully your little reptile buddy should be o.k.
