What should I do with BMW 318

Question

My BMW 318 is 12 years old. I am being told to repair this differential leak that would cost 3k. The car is only worth 4k now. What should I do?

Should I chuck this car and buy a new one? Or should I repair this one and pay the 3k?

how do you do your math?  12 years old, but its a 06 model?

Anyhow, if every thing else on the cars if fine, you can find a used differential and have a shop install it.  It should not be so much.  

How bad is the leak?  If its not too bad, you can still drive a car for a long time.

Dont chuck it, sell it! Im sure there are people out there who may be interested.

Put it on Gumtree, or put a For Sale sign on it.

If you have some time, shop around about this diff leak. Always get a second opinion. A nice four banger bmw is a nice car to have(miss my 2002, but drive a 14 yo V8 Bimmer now (a Nikisil block that mechanics told me would never last some 200K ago). I'd fix the diff, but the leak couldn't possibly cost that much. I would think that a whole rebuilt diff for a 318 would be cheaper. Bottom line 1. what could you replace it with (at what cost?) and 2. how much is it worth to you?

A good used diff should be about $500

Just bring it to the junk yard, or unload it on some unsuspecting 17 year old.

It's a money pit. Trust me.
