Question:

What should I do with a daylily seed pod?

I am new to daylilies, having gotten my first one this year. A few weeks ago, something started growing from it that I believe is a seed pod, but I don't know what to do with it. Do I pick it? Leave it on the stalk? Open it? Store it in the garage for winter? Plant it? Any information would be greatly appreciated! BTW, I live in Zone 5. Thanks!

  1. Throw it out.

  2. If it is a common orange ditch lily, I would pick it off and throw it away. Ditch Lilies are the most common and multiply like crazy, even without the seeds.

If it is a rarer type and something really pretty, keep an eye on the pod and when it starts to split open, get the seeds and you can sow them in the fall and they could grow in the Spring.

It isn't necessary though to collect the seeds as day lilies spread by their roots.
