Question:

What should I do with my dog?

Ok, my dog Rocky (a mix Rotty) bit an 11 year old girl last week (minor bite and few scratches). Animal came to my house about two days ago to put my dog in quarantine for 10 days in my property. Now, I'm always worried that my dog will get loose and bite another kid again, I would always check on him whenever I hear a kid screams :(. So, I'm thinking of just handing him to the Animal Control Officer when she shows up here on the next week. Am I doing the right thing? I mean, I don't want them to put him to sleep, I want them to find him a good shelter that has no children running around everywhere. I love my dog, I've been spending a lot of time with him because I might end up doing this, I really want to keep him forever, but not the way he is. And I hate being worried all the time, is there any hope for me? His three years old, is it too late to correct this bad behavior of his?

Whenever I look deep into his eyes, I get really sad...

Thanks guys!

  1. All he needs is a muzzle!  My aunt put one on her dog and it could drink and suck kibble into its mouth fine.  It stops barking and l*****g too.  They really don't mind it.  But I would see a vet and get one fitted like they did.

  2. I would make this a hard lesson learned! But honestly there must've been warnings and signs from before that your dog doesn't like kids. Dogs don't just up and bite someone randomly. I don't think you can correct this behavior by yourself. Find a GOOD trainer. A good trainer will evaluate the dog and see if the problem is linked with prey or fear etc. You must take all precautions as well. Never leave this dog unsupervised or off leashed outside EVER. However the dog got loose previously, make sure it NEVER happens again.

Don't give him to animal control if you do think you can't control your dog. Most people will walk past a convicted child biter dog. Take the time to post adds and talk to private shelters. Make home interviews for anyone who wants your dog.

  3. ofcourse its not too late, but you have gotta be serious and not let your emotions drag you along now but run out of commitment later.

  4. No I could never give my dog up EVER. I understand it's risky with children but children provoke dogs half the time. If you don't have kids then put your dog first don't allow any kids around him and never have him off a leash. My dog attacks other dogs so I never take him off a leash and I've had him for 10 years, I've learnt to never let my guard down when walking him in public on a leash, always be prepared to cross the street if another dog is approaching and twice a week I take him out of town where he can run loose off the leash as I know there are no other dogs around, apply this to children instead of dogs. The other thing is I would do the muzzle thing, you can train him to be with kids if he is wearing a muzzle and it will allow you to relax more, spend a lot of time with him around kids and if he growls at the kids then yell no and take him home, after awhile he will learn that he is not allowed to growl or hurt kids. A lot of people are funny when it comes to dog bites & children they will always tell you the dog should be put down but what did that child do to the dog for them to bite that is the question.
