Question:

What should I do with my son?

I have a 6 year old son. The past few days he has been frequently going to the bathroom (pee) more so than usual. So of course, I've been watching what he drinks. But he still seems to be going a lot lately. What could be going on?

Could he possibly have a urinary infection or something perhaps?

I have an older son also, but he's never had this problem.

How do the doctor's treat the urinary infections? Are there any over the counter medicines or remedies that I could try??

  1. my first question would be "is he in pain?" if not, then i highly doubt it's a urinary tract infection.

my advice to you is dont keep him from drinking anything just because he's urinating more frequently. if anything, get him to drink more water just in case it IS an infection, then the water will flush it out.

some kids get to an age where they just start urinating more often, but i'm not gonna sit here and tell you to ignore it. simply call a nurse at your dr's office and ask them if there's reason for concern. :-) good luck

  2. Yes, there are home remedies.  However, first, you need to determine if it's a UTI or if it's something else.  Does it hurt him when he pee's?

If it doesn't hurt him, then leave it alone.  It will work itself out.  If not, pure cranberry juice (beware!  It's VERY sour) or cranberry pills will help.  NO SUGAR.  Sugar will irritate his bladder.  So will junk food.  Go crazy with the dark green vegetables.  Avoid high sugar fruit like apples and bananas.  Berries are fine, green apples are fine.

  3. He could have a UTI, in fact, sometimes in males there is no pain. Check his urine to see if it is cloudy, or has a strong odor, which can also indicate a UTI. There are some hotlines like ask a nurse, in which you can call a 1-800 number and speak to an RN, they will use the information to decide what further steps should be taken. If you suspect something is truly abnormal, call your pediatrician.

  4. ask him if it hurts while going potty.. call the doctor .. they will do a urine test and if it shows infection they will treat with antibiotics

  5. Have you asked him if it hurts when he pees?  He should be able to communicate with you about stuff like that.  If he says it does, take him to the doctor to get tested.  They will give him some medicine.

  6. You can get a home UTI test, if it is positive then you need a doctor to prescribe antibiotics.  Like some people said their may not be pain, but just a urge to go more often.

  7. Is he constipated? Is he actually peeing? Some kids at this age become constipated and then constantly go to the bathroom. Boys usually do not get urinary tract infections. When you ask him - does he say why he is going more?
