Question:

What should I do with my tomato plant?

My family has a tomato plant in a pot outside and where I live it's starting to drop into the low 60's, high 50's. I'm just wondering if I should bring the thing inside during the night and put it back outside during the day. (only 1 or 2 of the tomatoes are starting to ripen so I know it isn't ready yet)

  1. As long as the temperature does not drop much below 45  you should be O.K. - You must have planted it late

  2. Yes that works. But its really really important to make sure it goes outside as soon as you can in the morning and that it goes outside every single day no matter what. If you keep it inside the drastic decrease in light will cause the plant , even if it is in a sunny window, to turn yellow and die back.

  3. It's not necessary it would only be necessary if the temperature drops down to freezing or a big frost was going to happen.

That would only be done if the plant was young seedling and being hardened off.

Hardening off/open link below and scroll down to read the process.

which only applies to young transplants.

Bring plants indoors at night and on days when temperatures fall below 60 degrees F. Prolonged exposure

to low temperatures may cause a condition called “catfacing” on early fruit.
