I am dealing with ex-landlord who has been trying every possible ways not returning security deposit. He has done that to other tenants at his properties, he knows all the loop holes of the court system that even if the tenants files small or civil claims against him, he know that it is really hard or impossible to get the money. He knows that we can't afford to hire a lawyer. Maybe one of the viewers here might become his tenants, if you are looking for renting in Hasbrouck Heights, Maywood or Rochelle Park in New Jersey. Please help me what to do with the situation. If there is any organization I can get some help, please let me know. He has done that to so many peoples and some has to stop this guy. """HELP"""

  1. Take him to small claims court. With you records, and documents you should be able to get your $$$ back.

  2. Take him to court and if you can't afford a lawyer,go through legal aid in your city, they work with low income people who need legal help.

  3. He has 30 days to return security or give you written reasons why he's withholding it.  You don't need a lawyer and if he hasn't done these things you are entitled to ask for double.

Here's a link to NJ law

  4. Sue him like he just spilt a McDonalds hot coffee on you

  5. There is a tenant's union that is free  that you can check on that fights for renter's rights.  Call HUD or government resources such as the mayor's office for phone number

  6. Go to http://www.lsc.gov and try to find a legal services place in Jersey that specializes or at least deals with housing law.

Generally landlords have 30 days to return security deposits.
