I've been watching this nest outside on my porch. it started out with 5 babies. everyday for the past few days a baby has died. i've found them on the ground/porch. now there are 2 babies in the nest. i think 1 is dead and being eatten by bugs. the other one keeps shaking. it's really sad. i want to take the nest down and put it somewhere's else because the bird(s) remaining will probably die from the hard porch they will fall on. but i dont want the baby's mom to disown it if i touch it. that's what i hear what will happen if i do. what should i do i dont want it to suffer there.

i have cats btw.

  1. Sounds to me like something happened to the parents.  They would not keep a dead baby in the nest.  Really you should just let nature run its course, but if your conscience won't allow the birds to die, watch the nest to see if the parents are coming and going.  If not, attempt a rescue.

  2. Pluck the dead, bug infested bird from the nest. That will give the living bird a chance at survival. Watch carefully to see if the parents are feeding their young. If they are not, take the bird to the nearest vet. They will treat and send it on to a rehab.

Touching the nest does not make the moms and dads abandon their chicks. That's an old wives tale.

Not knowing what type of bird you have there, I can't state this for certain, but with some types of hatch lings, the strongest of them will kick every body else out. It's survival of the fittest and natures way.

    Hope this helps .

  3. its sad but the best thing to do is leave it alone (its the way of life)

  4. take a photo of the bird(do you know what kind it is?) take the photo to the vet and ask the vet what to do, i think feeding a baby bird takes alot of know how, plus the bugs...you wouldnt want to get bugs in the house ...ask the vet, or nearest animal or wildlife rescue...start making calls.

  5. take it down!!

you have a chance to save a life here

what do you think you should do?

if the babies are dying then the mom is not doing a very good job of taking care of them take it to your local animal rescue shelter..

  6. If you choose to take it down then please make sure that you contact a local rescue agency so you can arrange for a person qualified to care for a wild bird to rehab it. Contact your local vet and get the number BEFORE you take it down.

Birds are easy to stress out so you can do more harm by not knowing the proper procedures to removing it and the rehab will be able to tell you the best way to handle it.
