"Concerning payment i will ask that you be check in us funds, since I don't have the funds in your currency." A guy in Ontario, Canada wants to buy an item from me. The thing is he said that he would send me a check but the US has a different currency than Canada right? Can this check be exchanged here in the US for cash.

  1. A little caution here is warranted.  International checks don't clear as quickly as domestic checks.  The bank will usually credit your account right away even though the check hasn't been fully processed.  So you think you have the money, ship the item, only to find out several days later the check actually bounced and the bank took the money back.  Wait until the check actually clears before you ship the item.

  2. Your bank can convert funds to US dollars but there will be a fee. Be careful that this not a scam. Craig's list has advice about avoiding fraud. They may also have advice about currency conversion.

  3. Yes BUT you won't get your full value as the cheque will be subject to the exchange rate current at the time and maybe a processing fee from your bank.

It will also have a clearance time on it which means you can't access the money until the cheque has cleared.

The easiest way is to use a paypal account and he can pay you in $US and paypal does all the conversions etc. and debits him in Canadian currency.

  4. There is a difference in value. Make sure you know how much it is. Otherwise you might not get the money you are asking for.

Call the bank and ask how many US dollars you should get for the amount you are asking.

  5. Yes it can, just take it to a bank
