I lost my ID and I also lost a piece of paper on which I had my social security number written on,and also my daughter's and husband's. I did this because I didnt like to carry the actual cards around, and sometimes I would need the numbers. Well I dont know how they got lost,or on what moment. I dont know if they were stolen or misplaced. I been looking for them for a while and cant find either. Should I report the social securities as lost even if I have the actual cards?Or what do you suggest I do?

  1. yes, definetly get in touch with SS office and tell them whats happened, it doesnt matter if its not the actual card...someone could be trying to use your identity already...

    good luck

  2. The SS office can not do anything.  They don't change your social security number or anything of the such.  I've lost mine before and had to reapply for a new one, it's the same ssn number NO MATTER WHAT.  The best thing you can do, is contact your credit card companies and CALL THE THREE CREDIT BEURAUS(spelling?) Tell them you want to put a lock on your credit file.  It's generally free to put one on and in most states free to take it off if you need to apply for a loan or something.  Some states may charge a small fee to suspend the lock for a short period of time.  And tell them you want to put a fraud alert on your credit report. What this does, anytime someone goes to try to use your ssn, it will come up to places that extend credit that your info is not available and generally denies anything from being done, then, a fraud alert will also pop up and they will be aware to be extra cautious with who they are dealing with and are required to need more forms of id.

  3. Not only should you notify the ss office, I would file a police report. Ask to make a "lost" report. That way it is time stamped if someone is charging $1000's of dollars on credit cards with your name and social you have a better chance of fighting it.
