I am in college and my class is going out to a Thai restaurant for lunch, do you have any suggestions what I should get? I have never be to this type of restaurant before. I don't know what to expect. Any insights.

  1. It may be spicy.  I read the menu carefully.  Also ask the waitress or waiter what is not spicy.

  2. taco with spanish rice.... plain rice works too :)

  3. Ask the waitress and ask for mild or no spice. See if you can get a menu from the place on the web.

  4. Pad thai is a really safe thing to get at a thai restaurant. Some people don't like some of the little condiments it comes with though. I also recommend pad see ew. YUM!

  5. My favorite thai dishes are southern Thai that incorporate coconut to balance out the hot chili peppers.  My favorite is the green curry (Gaeng Keow Wan).   I order it with chicken.   Also, tom kha gai soup is really flavorful with the coconut milk.  If you don't like cocunut, tom yum soup is really good too.  Many of the dishes are served with rice just like Chinese food.  There are also noodle dishes.  One that is particularly good is drunken noodles.  Some of the more popular ingredients in Thai food are lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal, shallots, lime juice, fish sauce, tamarind, and crushed chili peppers.

  6. pan thai and some tea

    it taste like lo mein

  7. Since you're new to thai restaurants, go with the simple dishes..

Can't go wrong with Thai fried rice or Pad Thai (noodle).. and order chicken satay (grilled skewered) with dipping sauce..

There're so many other dishes I could recommend but I'm not sure if you're ready for them yet. (strong curry, coconuts, etc)

Also, Spicyness in thai dishes are different from spicyness from others, even from mexican food. So be careful when they ask how spicy.. I suggest for your first time, order medium spicy or less..

Jasmine tea goes real well with thai food also.. or you can order Thai Iced Tea if you prefer something cold to cool down your tongue..

    Enjoy!!

  8. Pad Thai is a pretty safe bet at any Thai restaurant - noodles, peanuts, chicken and shrimp, bean sprouts.  It's very tasty.

  9. Pad Thai is really good.  It's a little spicy but not burny hot.  If a little spice is okay, I'd definately go for this one.

  10. It's going to be spicy.  I love peanut chicken though.  It's ordinary but it gets the point across sorta like General Tso's.  (I don't care for that myself anymore however it's what opened me up to chinese.)

  11. Pad thai noodles or Fried rice is the safest for someone new.

If you want to be bold ask about items you think would be interested in. somethings are hot so if that bothers you ask

  12. your in college? try the internet and see if they have menu and see what you might like there, the restaaurant you know to get an idea

  13. Get a simple pasta that sounds close to what you know..

  14. It's kind of hard to recommend thai dishes because everyone has different taste. But the best thing to do is ask the server what they would recommend or what the most popular dishes are.  They will usually recommend something good and won't steer you in the wrong way.  Be open to trying new things though, because Thai dishes may not sound appetizing sometimes but usually everything is really good.
