Well, I'm 14 (girl) and starting my first ever dance class on Tuesday. It's a ballet class, with Lyrical motions once we get the basics. (Lyrical recitle at the end! :])

Well I'm NERVOUS. We have to wear black leotards, and pink tights and ballet shoes. Never done anything like this before. haha

Any advice on how to get ready for the class? (Stretches or anything)

  1. Lyrical generally means a slow and fluid piece.  All of your barre work will help tremendously with this.  As you go through the class, pay extra attention to extending your limbs as far as you can.  Over time, you will get even better, and in the recital, you will shine.

Before class:  Eat, but a small light meal.  Be well rested and get ready to focus.  Your teacher will help you learn what you need to do.  At the beginning it is generally a lot of stretching and getting to know the positions and proper alignments for the body.  In ballet the legs are rotated outward in plies and turns and such.... so if you want, start working on your turnout!

  2. leg stretches, or lunges

  3. stretch stretch stretch!!  and most important confidence, you can achieve anything you put your mind into!!

  4. practice sitting in your splits (right, left and middle) and i would make sure that you know all of the feet positions and some basic vocabulary

  5. Always point your toes. Always, always, always whether you are leaping or at the barre. Never look down, suck in your stomach and squeee your butt, spot (when your spinning, pick an object to look at and each time you whip your head around, always look at that object), turn out, you'll be just fine.
