I am moving to Japan for one year. What happens when you land (Tokyo)? What do they make you do? What do they ask? What do they search? Do you have to do any testing? Do you have to take photos or fingerprints? Excited, but not sure what to expect. Thanks for the help!!

  1. Don't you worry! They do take your photo and fingerprints, but it does not take very long. Japanese immigration staff are very friendly.

  2. relax, there's nothing to be worried about. people are very nice there but don't know much english.

  3. I don't know who gave thumbs down to the first two answerers cos they are right. Japanese immigration is nothing to worry about and the people are friendly and helpful, even if their English isn't great.

Assuming you have the correct visa etc to allow you stay for a year, then you shouldn't sweat it. It's just like flying into any foreign country. I've always flown into Osaka Kansai but I'd imagine Tokyo is the same...

they don't make you 'do' anything.

they may ask the purpose of your visit, where you are staying etc. they may ask nothing at all (you'll probably get a landing card to complete on the plane where you'll give all that info anyway)

they 'may' search your bag, but probably won't unless the drugs sniffer dog gets excited, lol

  4. You will fill out a form before you land. When you go through immigration you will hand the officer your passport and landing card. He will ask you to place your fingers on a sensor to be scanned and will have your photo taken. He will then place a sticker in your passport with a barcode on it. Very easy and very friendly people.
