  1. they eat harvester ants (link below) but let it go horned toads dont rely on each other to survive, stress out pretty easily and are protected in most areas they are found so the horned toads best bet at survival to be on its own.

  2. I'm sure he has a mother somewhere (unless she became a snack or fell ill), but she wouldn't be able to help him.  These reptiles lay their eggs, and then go about their business.  They do not care for the young.

The answer is Ants.  Please check out:

and be sure this is what you have.

These lil guys can be very difficult to do (I had one we called Nickel, cause that's how big he was nose to tail tip when we got him; he could sit on a nickel and not hang off).

You can contact area pet shops (exotics/reptile specialty shops would be better) for one which will order ants of the proper size in for you, or use the link below.

Good luck, and I hope this has been helpful.

  3. you should feed him flightless fruit flies. you can find them at  www.petco.com or at petco

  4. keep trying the crickets. ask ur local pet store maybe they will suggest meal worms.

  5. Most species of horned lizards are federally protected and just by taking it in your home you may have committed a federal crime. Lizards don't have mothers who care for them. They are on their own from the day they hatch. Let it go. They are not easy to keep in captivity.

  6. Horny toads eat primarily big red ants. I have tons of them at my ranch. If you have a red ant bed nearby, the kind that kill all the vegetation around them, take him out to it and set him nearby. He will eat them. Best if you turn him loose near an ant hill. Their mothers do not raise them.

In Texas, both the Texas and Mountain Short-horned lizards are state listed as Protected: which means it is illegal for anyone to take, possess, transport or sell them without a special permit. Not only is it illegal to keep horned lizards, but they are difficult to care for in captivity, and most captured ones eventually die from improper care.
