What should I get my best friend and her fiance for their wedding? Both are PhD students and love books, etc.?

I want this to be personal, so I know it's weird I'm posting about it here. But I thought maybe someone would have an idea that would spark something in me. I am thinking something like a book shelf or something, but I want to make sure it's something they like, so that might be risky. Both are PhD students in goverment/political science, and he's also a law student. They love books and politics but are also fun and silly--they love really bad reality TV shows, for example (not that I'd get them a gift that has to do with that, but just to give an ideao f their personalities).

You could never go wrong with a gift certificate from Borders or any book store.

You should get them one of those bar globes! You know, the globe that opens up and their is a mini-bar inside. It would make an excellent addition to a home library. You know, glass of scotch while you read a bit about history? lol, I kid. A gift certificate to their favorite bookstore would be fantastic. Perhaps if you know what kinds of things interest them in their particular areas of study, you could get them some interesting books on those topics. Some fun book ends could be nice. Perhaps you could do a whole fun gift basket, with books, books ends, book marks, gift certs, and all that good stuff. If its what they love, I would go crazy with it.

What about first editions or leather-bound editions of their favorite classics? Or a really gorgeous atlas? I would have loved an atlas as a present, a really quality one is quite expensive but so worth it.

If they like to curl up on the sofa and read or watch TV, what about a gorgeous blanket they can snuggle under? A really big one, maybe a soft one made in Scotland or something special.

If they don't live together ( and even if they do) , chances are they don't have much Christmas Decorations. Get them some ornaments for their tree. Hallmark has some cute ones. :)

What about one of those goofy kind of books. My best friend loves science. So if it were me I'd go the science section of Borders (or wherever) and get a *fun* book like "How things work" - he may already know everything in that book but it'd be something that shows I tried to make an effort. I'm sure their is some sort of book about law that is kinda goofy. Or a book of lawyer jokes! :-D
