What should I get my friend who is studying abroad in New Zealand for five months?

My friend, who will be 20 years old, is leaving in a few months to study abroad in New Zealand. I want to get her something nice, but not too expensive, because she is going to be gone for so long. Any suggestions?

I went there! It was beautiful, I hope your friend has a good time. My suggestion is calling cards. One can never have too many when she's abroad; international calls get expensive.

Instead of giving her something before she leaves; why dont you send her Care - packages while shes over there ? I know i've traveled abroad for months at a time as a student ambassador ( at the age of 14) ; and you begin to miss American things. Sending care packages with the latest US magazines ; some familiar snack foods , and a simple note saying " hey ! i miss you ! " would deffinatly cheer her up; and give her something to look forward to; as opposed to getting her a one-time gift.
