What should I look at to find the cause of static on our phones?

We have problems with really bad static on our phones. We have tested all of them, wireless and our one with a wire (even our old rotary phone) and they all have really bad static. Sometimes, we can't even hear the person on the other side. They can even hear it through their phones too. What could be causing this? We would like to figure out the problem before we call the phone company.

funny i had this issue a few weeks ago, i traced all the phone lines and found one that had been stapled and the cable was torn - replaced the cable and its all good now - there was also condesation on the wires......

You can go out to the NIU panel outside your house.  You can plug a phone cord into the outlet (there are 2 , you'll find the one i want).  If you get a clear signal, the phone line to your house is good.  The problem is in the wiring.  If that signal has static, the problem is the phone company's and they must fix it for free. /

actually it is the job of the people at the phone company to service your phones...they need to get out and work from time to time, let them earn their paychecks.
