What should I look for in a drum set?

I'm planning on teaching myself to play the drums. The first step I've decided, is to get a set. So what should I look for in one? I want one that would be good for a beginner as well as for more advanced playing and will be reliable with good sound. Preferably cheap, under $1,000 max. would be nice

Check at musicianfriend. They have all the prices. Yamaha and pearl have good drum sets. I prefer Tama becaue of the quality ofthe hardware.
