The Ivies that I will be applying to are Columbia, Cornell, and Princeton. The other colleges that I will be applying to are NYU, Northwestern, Northeastern, Boston U, and the College of NJ among others. .

Anyway, I am planning on becoming a neurosurgeon/ neurologist specializing in Pediatric cases. So, I was wondering, what should I major in in college?

Biology??

Chemistry??

What are some good majors for people who plan on becoming medical doctors?

Thanks :)

  1. Many premeds major in Bio or Chemistry because you have to take many of these courses anyway for Premed.  Holy Cross is one of the tops for premed in New England.  They have a 87% acceptance rate to medical school and 10% of their alumni are physicians.

  2. Any major would be fine, as long as you complete the medical school prerequisites. Many students choose biology or biology related, chemistry, biochem, chem engineering, anthropology, psychology, and so forth. Take whatever interests you. I took medical anthropology and it changed my view on medicine for the better for the past 40 years.

  3. It doesn't really matter what your undergrad major is unless it is a science major. Biology or Chemistry would be fine. Good Luck!

  4. You should do your major in whatever you find more interesting and will lead to better grades, for med school.

I love science, I prefer biology over chemistry, but I test poorly in both.

    Good luck

  5. What a coincidence. I just asked the SAME question. I say neurobiology. Granted you get accepted to some of those you will have a lot of choices of majors. I read somewhere that like 9/10 are Bio or Chem majors, you don't have to major in Neurobiology or whatever to be a brain surgeon. Also, don't forget that you still have a few years before you even have to declare your major. In short though, I say explore more majors than just Bio or Chem but if you think you are serious about becoming a Pediatric Neurologist or surgeon then I would definitely focus on the Neurological science majors like neurobiology. I am also applying to NYU, Cornell, and Northwestern as well, all those colleges are great. You sound very motivated and driven which is what will get you into these colleges and help you become a great doctor. Good luck!
