I have cleared entrance exam of B.A.(Hons.) 1st year Russian language in Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU) and at the same time i have also cleared entrance exam of B.A.(Hons.) 1st year Spanish language in University of Delhi(DU).

Now I am in a dilemma what should i opt for; JNU is better in foreign languages than DU, but Spanish has more influence than Russian.

What do you think?

  1. Go for Russian. Speakers of exotic/more difficult languages are often sought after by government agencies. Spanish speakers are a dime a dozen and you can pick up Spanish easily enough at a later date. It is not all that hard to learn, compared to Russian. That way, you end up with both languages.

  2. That depends on where you live and what you want to do with it.  I live in Milwaukee, WI and am fluent in Spanish and I know a tiny bit of Russian.  I wouldn't have the job I have now without Spanish.  In retail I was able to use it at least 3 times/week.  Now I am teaching in a bilingual school.

On the other hand, when I did get a chance to use my Russian, it was much more impressive because not as many people speak Russian.

If you want a useful language, go with Spanish.  If you want a unique one, go with Russian.

  3. Well, which language do you like more? Have you studied any of those before?

I have studied Russian for 5 years or so and I can't still speak it very well. But I do like it! It is actually very very juicy and interesting language, but also very hard. It has rules that for English-speakers can be pretty ...new. My native language is one of the Finno-Ugric ones and so weird things are familiar to me since I was born hehe. So what I mean is that it is for the people who really are interested in it and sure they want to study exactly that. But then again, it really is interesting... And about influence... Europe is full of small countries that have native languages closely related to Russian. That's not so little either!

About spanish... I have never studied any of it, but I'd like to. But well, I am more Slavic languages person myself. Though...

Well, if there's anything else you'd like to know, I'd be happy to help you. Just ask!
