Question:

What should I put on my 'safe car' checklist?

I've been working up to getting my 1993 Geo Storm into perfect condition, but it still has a very, very long way. At this point, its so far from perfect the cosmetics of the whole thing are not even a concern. I'm going to be driving it 2000 miles in two weeks and I fear its not in the condition to make that trip safely.

I do know the shocks and struts do need to be replaced badly and there is an oddball tire/rim that needs replacing. We replaced the front and rear axles, the clutch cable, and the radiator.

Right now on the list I have written down, I have "Replace fuel filter, air filter, and oil filter, get oil change, new tire, brakes"

What would you suggest for me to do to my car? Would a tune up be a good thing right now? As you can tell, I'm not the smartest with cars. I'm a 19 year old country girl, I know my horses but cars are like another language.

I appreciate any and all time taken to answer this question, thank you.

Exhaust manifolds or header for leaks and loose bolts.

  2. Don't forget to check your spare tire to make sure that it is good to go in case you get a flat tire. And windshield wipers if yours are bad. Also check your transmission fluid to see if it needs replacing, long road trips with hills and such take their toll on automatic transmissions.

  3. Make sure your tires are inflated to the correct tire pressure. Over or under inflation can affect you fuel economy. Purchase a tire pressure gauge and use it at every fill up.
