What should I see in Berlin?

I will only be staying 2 nights and everything I'm reading is overwhelming because it's such a big city. I'm interested in the history of the city as well as some of the must-dos (I want a beer and a pretzel!) and I'm particularly interested in culture and nightlife as well.

Where in the city should I stay? Which parts are most interesting, most compact, and safest?

I'll also have 2 nights in Dresden and thought I might be meeting a friend there who would know what to show me, I'm still open to suggestions for what to do there as well!

germany has the most beautiful castles and lots of salt mines, its really sight taking, go to where the berlin wall was too for culture. you got to try their snitchels tooooo they are delisious. their ice cream is good too. not as sweet as ours, and you got to try the gummy bears, thats where they first started and the chocolate is the best, have fun and enjoy.

There are no salt mines in Berlin, just for the record:-) As for the food: pretzels are more typical for the south of Germany. In Berlin, I would recommend trying the famous Currywurst (spicy sausage), e.g. at "Curry 36" in Kreuzberg (the best in Berlin!). For the rest: there is indeed so much to do. Walk through the district of Kreuzberg and Mitte and discover the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag (government building with the glass roof), the Holocaust Memorial, the rest of the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie (former border between the American and the Russian sector of the city) and the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, go shopping at Französische Strasse/Friedrichstrasse (e.g. the big French department store Galeries Lafayette), have a look at "Topographie des Terrors" at Wilhelmstrasse (permanent free exhibit about WWII)....All these are in walking distance and in close proximity. Moreover, go up onto the TV Tower at Alexanderplatz (great view over the city, but expensive and you might have to queue for a while), visit Oranienburger Strasse with its nice cafes and pubs at night (and see the hookers work the street at night there;-), check out Hackescher Markt and the Hackesche Höfe (courtyards with funky shops of local designers and the like) or go to the zoo with the famous polar bear Knut (and loads of other animals of course)! I would recommend staying in the districs Mitte or Kreuzberg as they're central and full with hotels. However, steer clear of the area Kottbusser Tor in Kreuzberg! For the rest, it's safe there. Don't get lured into staying in districts such as Neukölln or Reinickendorf, they're just boring and not very central. Check an online map before booking a hotel and make sure you're somewhat in the middle of the city, else you'll end up spending most of your two days in the metro (U-Bahn) or the S-Bahn traveling around the city!
